Another Unnecessary Mastectomy @ Hotel Dieu

Shocking news, last week, of an unnecessary mastectomy performed by Dr. Barbara Heartwell at Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital late last year.  Tuesday, word that another mastectomy had been performed unnecessarily – removing the breast of a healthy patient – back in 2001.

With the revelation of the second mistaken mastectomy, Dr. Heartwell is voluntarily withdrawing from operating at Hotel Dieu.

H1N1 Countdown

Time is running out if you want to get the swine flu vaccine.  The local Health Unit only has three vaccination clinics left.  The remaining schedule is:

Wednesday Dec. 2, 2 p.m.- 8 p.m. at the Essex Arena;  Thursday Dec. 3, 2 p.m.- 8 p.m. at the Health Unit on Ouellette Ave.;  Tues. Dec. 8, 2 p.m.- 8 p.m. at the Moose Lodge on Tecumseh.

Massive Crib Recall

Stork Craft drop-side cribs are being recalled in record numbers; 968,000 in Canada and 1.2 million in the U.S.  Parents are urged to immediately stop using the cribs and contact Stork Craft Manufacturing to receive a repair kit that converts the drop side to a fixed side. Nearly 150,000 of the cribs carry the Fisher-Price logo.

Of 12 infants who got trapped in the cribs in the U.S., four died of suffocation, including two aged 7 months, a 9-month-old and a 6-month-old. Three babies became trapped in Canada, but all survived. There were 20 cases of babies falling from the cribs, including eight in Canada, with injuries ranging from concussion to bumps and bruises.

H1N1 Anyone

Two Local Swine Flu Deaths

The Windsor/Essex County Health Unit announced Friday that two deaths in the area have been linked to the H1N1 flu. A 56 year old man and a 55 year old man, both of whom had health conditions, had not received the vaccine. Dr. Allen Heimann, the medical officer of health, said there are now 134 confirmed swine flu cases in Windsor/Essex.  Check the health unit website for a complete vaccination clinic list. www.wechealthunit.org

H1N1 Vaccine Update

Ontario is opening its H1N1 immunization program to first responders (police and firefighters), frontline institutional correctional workers, and people aged 65 and over who live in institutions like long-term care homes. A small number of ministry staff who are directly involved in the pandemic response will also be immunized this week.

Ontario will continue to immunize the six priority groups with a special focus on pregnant women, who are at higher risk of severe disease from H1N1 infection.

There is a vaccination clinic at the Essex County Civic Centre Thursday, from 2 until 8; then nothing until the following Monday, again 2 until 8 at the Harrow Arena Complex.

3 Deaths in London Attributed to H1N1

A two-month old infant and two people in their 70’s died in hospital in London, Wednesday.  All three deaths resulted from flu-like symptoms.  It is believed this is the first case of an infant succumbing to the H1N1 flu.  There have now been 37 deaths in the province, attributed to the swine flu.

Which Came First?

How do you feel about raising chickens in your backyard?  Perhaps more importantly how do you feel about your neighbours doing it in their yards?  City council will have the Licensing Commission look into the pros and cons of allowing backyard chicken operations.

Some municipalities in Canada allow residents the opportunity to cut food costs by raising there own chickens however, there are obvious concerns that have to be taken into consideration.  Some feel the smell and possibility of disease is too much of a drawback.

So, there is a chance Windsor residents could be producing their own eggs, only if the chicken comes first.

Tony Toldo

84 year old Tony Toldo, a local businessman lost his battle against cancer, and passed away Friday. Toldo made many very generous donations to local charities and organizations – a good portion of which were health related.

H1N1 Vaccine Shortage

Clinics are running out and next weeks supply is low.

Makers of the H1N1 vaccine will not be able to produce enough doses of the flu vaccine to handle next weeks expected demand.  This week, provinces across the country received two million doses. Next week, they will receive just 400,000 doses. Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. David Butler-Jones says Canada still has more swine flu vaccine doses per capita than any other country. The company insists weekly supplies will rise back into the millions the following week.

The Province announced Thursday, to accommodate demand there will be more locations and expand hours for clinics next week.

Vaccine Line-ups

A huge line-up in Tecumseh Tuesday, as hundreds of people showed up for the H1N1 Flu Vaccine.  Police were brought in to organize the crowd as people began showing up from the immunization 2 hours before the clinic opened.

New Rules at Church

The Roman Catholic Diocese of London has implemented significant changes to mass.  Some parishioners were taken by surprise Sunday when it was announced to congregations that effective immediately:

  • Temporary withdrawal of Communion from the cup
  • No Communion on the tongue
  • Hand sanitizers at the doors of the church
  • A the greeting of peace recommend a greeting and an acknowledgement but no shaking of the hands
  • Encourage parishioners to stay home if they exhibit flu-like symptoms
  • Parishes should prepare for Phase 2

The date for Phase 2 has yet to be announced, but according to the Diocese will include:

  • Removal of Holy Water at the entrance of the church (to be replaced by rite of sprinkling at the beginning of Eucharist)
  • Sanitizing of pews and hymnals with appropriate sanitizer before/after each Sunday Liturgy

Flu Shot Clinics Open

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit will begin administering free flu shots beginning Tuesday Oct. 13.   Flu Clinics are for Ontario residents 65 years of age and older. Whelan Resigns

The Honourable Susan Whelan, CEO, Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division, has resigned citing health reasons.  Ms. Whelan was diagnosed with breast cancer this past August and has been undergoing chemotherapy since.  “I fully understand Susan’s wish to focus on her health and her cancer fight right now,” said Marion Kirsh, Chair, Board of Directors.  At the Canadian Cancer Society we know this is a difficult time for her. Susan is a fighter and she is committed to beating cancer completely. The staff and volunteers of the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division, join me in wishing Susan the very best,” Kirsh added.  Rick Perciante, Vice President, Development and Marketing has been appointed acting CEO.

The Fat Truth

More than 50% of us are overweight.  That was all the impetus the Windsor-Essex Health Unit needed to launch a county wide challenge.  “We lose, we win.” is the title of an 8 week challenge to the residents of Windsor-Essex.  The health unit will hold a series of information seminars to help people improve on their diet, and increase their physical activity.  Information on area seminars can be found at www.welosewewin.ca
